What is a Sweet 13 Photoshoot?


For many young girls, turning 13 is a big milestone. They're officially a teenager, and a fun way to celebrate this birthday is with a sweet 13 photoshoot. I've done these sessions a couple times and they are so fun! Some opt to do a photoshoot with friends or siblings in lieu of a big party. Here are some of the sweet 13 photos I've taken in two areas of the Shenandoah Valley.

13th Birthday Photos at Massanutten Creek in Luray, Virginia


I had previously taken 18th birthday photos for Mary Nelson's older sister, and Mary Nelson fell in love with the venue. She decided that she wanted to do something similar for her 13th birthday.


Massanutten Creek is a beautiful farm venue just outside of Luray, Virginia. With panoramic mountain views, vast fields, and a picturesque butterfly mural, there were a variety of opportunities for photos.

Sweet 13 Birthday Photoshoot at Constitution Park in Waynesboro, Virginia


Emi is a dancer and wanted to incorporate some of her moves and poses into her sweet 13 photoshoot. We chose a unique park in Waynesboro with a trail along the river, and though it was nearing winter the golden hour light made everything warm and beautiful.

Sweet 13 Photoshoot Ideas


The best part about a sweet 13 photoshoot is that it's meant to be laidback and fun. Let the birthday girl have a say in the planning – they tend to have some of the most creative ideas!


Have fun with outfits and accessories, but keep modesty in mind. No short skirts or dresses, and remember comfy shoes. They more freedom of movement, the better the photos will be. Choose a location that is sentimental or holds meaning, such as a park, library, ranch, etc. The location you choose will help determine the best time of day for photos, but typically outdoor photoshoots are beautiful near golden hour.
