Karen and George's bed and breakfast wedding was small in size, but there was a lot of history behind it.
They first knew each other as childhood classmates. Life took them in different directions, they each married other people who had also been part of their friend group, and decades later...Karen and George found their way back to one another.
They chose River Dell Bed & Breakfast in Luray, Virginia for an intimate wedding with just two close friends joining them for the celebration.
River Dell was an especially fitting setting for a day like theirs. Rather than separating the wedding into a series of formal events and locations, everything happened in and around the B&B. They stayed for the weekend, got ready inside, held the ceremony outside, explored the property for portraits, and come back in for brunch afterward. The B&B owner prepared a beautiful spread of food, and also baked and decorated their wedding cake.
A Very Personal Ceremony
One of my favorite things about photographing smaller weddings is how much room there is to make the ceremony and the entire event unique and personal. Karen and George's two closest friends were part of the day with them, from the quiet time beforehand through their ceremony and brunch afterward.
Karen and George had also chosen songs for one another, which were played during their vows. It was such a simple addition, but as avid music lovers, it added a really meaningful touch to their vows.
There was laughter, a few emotional moments, and none of the distance that sometimes comes with a larger wedding ceremony. Everyone there was quite literally part of it.
Wedding Portraits Along the River
After the ceremony, Karen and George had plenty of time to simply stroll around the property together. We used the dock along the river, the trees and lawn surrounding the B&B, and some of the quieter little corners around the house. There was no elaborate portrait schedule and nowhere else we needed to rush off to.
That's another thing I especially love about photographing intimate weddings and elopements. They don't have to become an all-day production to feel significant. Having fewer things on the timeline gives everyone (and the photos) room to breathe.
Karen and George's portraits also felt appropriately relaxed and nature-based. Their day wasn't about recreating a traditional wedding on a smaller scale. It was simply about marrying their best friend, celebrating with their favorite people, and spending the rest of the morning together.
Brunch Back at the B&B
After portraits, everyone headed back inside for brunch, cake and a little more celebrating. The entire wedding moved easily from one part of the day into the next. Ceremony, portraits, cake and brunch all were held in the same venue, adding to the laidback charm.
There is no rule that a second marriage, getting married later in life, or simply wanting something small means the day has to feel like a lesser version of a traditional wedding. It can be thoughtful, beautiful and deeply personal without becoming complicated. Karen and George's wedding was exactly that.
If you're planning an intimate wedding, elopement or micro wedding in Luray or the Shenandoah Valley and want a day built around what actually matters to you, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up.
