Surprise Proposal at Blackrock Summit in Shenandoah National Park


Tyler was planning a surprise proposal in Shenandoah National Park, and he asked me to help plan and to photograph the event. He had a location in mind, and after much back and forth we ended up going with his original choice. I'm so glad that we did, because the views are spectacular, with a very short and easy hike to get there.


We chose Blackrock Summit, and I got there early to take some test shots and to be sure I was ready when they got there. It was a frigid 35 degrees at the summit, with the wind making it so cold I could barely feel my fingers. It's always about 10 degrees colder on the mountain than in the valley below, and it was already an unseasonably cold day to begin with.

After many exchanged emails prior to the big day, I knew about when to expect the couple at the summit, and when I saw them approaching I pretended to take tourist photos as planned. Sometimes I'm able to hide, but more often than not when I photograph proposals, I'm in plain sight pretending to be preoccupied.


I followed nonchalantly as Tyler chose the spot, and watched out of the corner of my eye as I tested my camera settings. When he got down on one knee, I kept the shutter snapping as I always do during proposals. I want to capture every single expression. Sometimes I tear up myself, it's such a touching thing to witness.

After the proposal, we explored the summit and took some engagement photos as the sun began to set behind the mountains. Choosing an overlook based on time of day (east-facing for sunrise, west-facing for sunset) helps ensure gorgeous lighting and that dreamy golden hour glow. Somehow, we had managed to get the overlook all to ourselves, so it felt relaxed and fun (albeit super cold).

Why Propose in Shenandoah National Park?


Shenandoah National Park is one of my favorite places for proposals, in part because the mountains are dear to my heart. Not only that, the park offers a mix of scenic overlooks, hiking trails, waterfalls, you name it. There's a great spot no matter what your vibe is.
